What's VOIP and Why Does It Matter?

One of the newest services available on the web is known as Voice Over IP, or VoIP.

So what? Well, for those who are paying an once per month fee for a Web connection, this indicates that you may use that very same connection to put free long distance telephone calls. But it has only been with the more contemporary explosion of fast net access use, that VOIP has gotten any attention.

While there are a variety of ways that VOIP is presently being used, most individual callers fall into one of 3 categories : ATA, IP Telephones , and Computer-to-Computer.

This adaptor essentially lets you hook up the telephone that is in your house, to your personal computer, and then your Net connection. What the ATA does, is turn the analog signals your phone sends out into digital signals that may be sent over the Net.
